He doesn't attempt to play dumb with the idiom. He understands its implied meaning. "I would have found somewhere to hide until I could determine whether or not I had been infected. If I had been infected and rescue with proper containment procedures was not possible, then the most logical option would have been to find a place where my remains would not be discovered by the indigenous species, or find a way to destroy my body so that there would be no remains."
